Longarm Quilting Checklist

Preparing your top and back for longarm quilting is a very important step in the process and will go a long way with the final appearance of your quilt. Following these guidelines will help you achieve the best results.

Quilt Backing

-Your quilt backing will need to be at least 4 inches longer than your top on all four sides. For example, if your top is 10" X 10", your backing piece would need to be 14" X 14".

-If at all possible, please leave the selvage edge at the top and bottom of your backing as this will aid in the most stable placement for quilting.

-We offer a variety of quit backing (108" wide) fabric for sale in the shop.

Quilt Top

-Consistent 1/4" seams that have been pressed to one side (or flat open in areas of high bulk) will keep your top flat and aide in the quilting process.

-Trimming all the loose threads on the back of your top (especially on areas with light fabric) will keep them from showing through after quilting.

-A 1/8" basting stitch around the perimeter of your quilt top will not only keep seams from coming undone, but provide stability against skewing during the quilting process.

-Press and starch your quilt top before bringing it to us, as we charge a fee for heavy pressing.

General Rules of Thumb

-Not all batting is created equal! For this reason, we ask that our customers purchase their batting from us. We carry "Quilters Dream" batting in a variety of blends with minimal price markup to ensure that your quilt has high-quality batting.

-A quilt top and backing that lays flat and square will yield the best result after quilting.
